Explore wasn't trying to cheat the system. He is already an AA Plat flying on AA metal; therefore he should get AA Plat benefits, regardless of what kind of mileage credit he accepts for the flight. I don't know how to resolve the situation - I think the airlines just have lousy systems - but I don't think the original poster was trying to do something sneaky.
