Go for the W. They've recently just remodeled their rooms. While LM is on the modern side, I wouldn't call it hip. You will find younger crowd at the W. Personally, W is my favorite hotel (next to St Regis) in SF. Service is great and I've had good luck with upgrades. Take a look at some pictures.
