I have had several Volvo S60 2.5Ts from National. Unless I need ground clearance in snow, I will take one over an SUV when traveling solo.
These really are compact cars. Great front seats, absolutely, but very little head & leg room in the back. Reasonable luggage space but loading is as if through a mail slot.
If you're driving in a state with smooth pavement you can enjoy the suspension tuning. It's a bit sportier than most American or Toyota rides. But if you find bad pavement (northern New England, metro Detroit freeways) the ride is absolutely brittle and punishing. I had one passenger comment, 'This thing rides like a small pickup!' He didn't mean it as a compliment.
For rated horsepower and vehicle size, fuel economy is not competitive. Keep your foot in the turbo to enjoy the torque and you may see low 20s MPGs and hear a not-at-all-tuneful 5-cylinder lacking inherent balance sound track. Volvo prices these with Acura TLs, Lexus ES350s and Infiniti G35s. Ha ha ha! That's why we find them in the National fleet, and see comparisons to Accords and Maximas stickered for $7000 less.
