Synching Outlook- too many .pst folders

In the process of synching my 2 laptops (via USB flash drive), I have done something really stupid.

Yesterday I discovered that in Outlook on this laptop, in addition to the normal Personal Folder (with all my up-to-date subfolders) and an Archive folder, I have 4 additiional "Personal Folders" with various subfolders.

When I go to C:\Documents and Settings\User Name\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook, I do indeed find that I’ve created different folders in my efforts to export and import my email. I see:

Outlook.pst
archive.pst
backup.pst
newOutlook.pst
4April08backup.pst
10March08backup.pst

My 2 questions are:

1. How can I tell which pst files can be safely deleted (they all display as having been updated today)?

2. How can I avoid repeating this error in the future?
