I've redeemed a few (3) trips for my family using miles, and I always check the availability of the award flights before booking the revenue ticket. I think some airlines say that they add seats, but personally, I like to book as soon as a date has been decided because I think (in general), availability of award seats becomes more limited closer to travel date.

The flights with frequent flyer miles available are not the best, but we would get there. However, there are no available return seats that we could use. My question is, are frequent flyer seats ever added to a flight? Should I watch to see if anything wil open up? Does it ever happen? Thanks.
