Using RTW desk for non-RTW travel?

A few times when trying to book my upcoming BDA-BOS-CVG-TPE-ICN-NRT-ATL-RDU-BOS-BDA trip over the phone, something wasn't quite right and it was pricing out at twice the $1,800 it should have been (later figured out it was a HIP check at NRT). Anyway, each time when I started asking questions about why the fare wasn't pricing correctly, the rep wanted to transfer me to the RTW desk. The guy at RTW first offered to put my itinerary into a queue for a specialist to manually price, then actually took the time to figure out what was causing the ticket to price out differently from what I expected.

So that makes me think, is the RTW desk generally good for making "complex" non-RTW reservations? If so that'd be great since they tend to know what they're doing better than the average international rep.
