United gave me $150 travel certificates after e-mailing back. I following the advice here and wrote a letter to United in Chicago, and the reply included additional $150 travel certificates for each person.

The strange thing is the e-mail and the letter were both signed by the same person, so I guess letters are scanned and e-mailed to India
