Normally I'd recommend Wailea because I'm partial to Maui. However, with an active volcano erupting, I'd go to Big Island. I mean, how many times in your life will you be able to see an active volcano?
The Marriott Wailea is directly on the water, with some rooms offering outstanding ocean views. However, instead of a sandy beach leading to the water, there are enormous lava boulders. Beautiful but not inviting to swim. There are hammocks on the grassy area where you can lounge and just watch the waves come in.
How far is it to a beach? A 10-15 minute walk to the neighboring resorts, depending on where you are at the Marriott. (It's a sprawling campus!)
