Thoughts on DL (mostly long-haul) from a Recent Switcher
So, I just took my first major trip on DL, since switching from CO, and thought I would share some thoughts. I tried to find a recent thread I had thought would be perfect for this, but couldn't find it for the life of me. At any rate, here goes.
CPH-ATL (r/t) in J
This was my first flight in BE, and overall I give it a passing grade.
- Seat: Well, it is narrow enough that you notice. At first. Once I sat down, it didn't seem to be that big of a deal. There was enough room for me (6', 190-200 pounds). I thought the legroom was good enough and the seat itself was decently comfortable.
Better than: CO (I find the 55" pitch too tight and hate the hemmed in feeling one gets, but others prefer more width), LX (the LX A330 J seat is flat out awful)
Comparable to: EK A330, KL
Worse than: NW, BA old, new Club World
Much worse than: BA new, new Club World
- Food: Gosh, the food was pretty darn good. Not quite restaurant quality, but good enough for a plane. Decent quantity, as well.
Better than: NW, CO (others love it, I find it stodgy, boring and with choices not well-suited to an airplane), KL, EK
Comparable to: BA
Worse than: LX, TG (the food I had on a BKK-HKT flight was better than any long-haul meal I have had, so they get a note here)
- Booze: The wine was not good. If there is one hard and fast rule when it comes to wine it is this: the cheap Wente wines are cheap for a reason. And what is up with the Lurton Torrontes? It smells like Fruit Loops and costs about as much. They had one completely forgettable Tuscan, but at least it wasn't notably bad On the other hand, pretty much all is forgiven because they have Woodford Reserve. It is only "pretty much" because I think they ran out on the outbound leg and my refill was most definitely Maker's Mark - what is more distressing is that the FA never mentioned it, probably hoping I wouldn't notice.
Better than: CO (the wine is just as bad and there is no Woodford to save the day), NW
Comparable to: BA (like Woodford, single malt covers up a lot of sins), KL (had some really well-chosen wines when I flew them in December), EK
Worse than: LX (very good wines, and some good Cognac)
- IFE: Great selection of movies. Easy to use system. Two thumbs up.
Better than: CO (I don't give points for having 200 movies stolen from TCM - I like to catch up on recent stuff), LX (no AVOD)
Comparable to: EK, KL (new system)
Worse than: BA (I like my screens BIG)
- Lounge: The BE lounge was nice enough. Nothing special, but the nibbles were appreciated and, again, they had Woodford. A bit of a shame that it will close, but hopefully the CRCs will steal some of the better aspects. Had to pay for WiFi, and still can't figure out why. The whole lounge thing is a place where DL (and all of the US airlines) could learn something from the Euro carriers. I mean, the BE lounge was bigger, but not in any way better than the BA Terraces lounge in CPH. It doesn't hold a candle to the hub lounges of many of the Euro carriers.
Better than: CO (Real Food and Woodford seals the deal), NW, KL
Much Worse than: BA, LX, EK
- Other items of note: Loved the pillow and blanket. Best I have had in any J class and on par with BA F. The amenity kit was a bit spartan, but the wife liked the lip balm. Service was good on the outbound, great on the return. Everyone I dealt with was friendly and attentive.
ATL-LGA in 757 Y
Not much to say. It was Y. Very decent product. Seat was comfortable enough with adequate legroom. No JetBlue, but a cut above CO or NW, comfort-wise, and about as much as I have come to expect from domestic Y.
LGA-CHS/CHS-ATL on CRJ
Ditto what I said above. CRJs stink, so I didn't expect much. Happy to see that the aisle armrest went up, which helped me stretch out a bit.
All in all, I can't complain. Virtually everyone I dealt with was friendly and helpful. I will have to try the flat-bed seats when they start rolling out, but everything else is in place to offer a very good product. For now, it is just decent.
