This may sound silly, but maybe not:

If you are not traveling on United, but are willing to pay the day rate, would they let you hang out in their lounge all day? I'd just as soon my Mom not be stuck wandering the airport all day, if she could get into a lounge to park it all day, that would be great. I ask re: United because I have status there, and none whatsoever on USAir (the airline taking her). I could just spring for it for her and be done with it.
