They can, but for some reason it's a bloody nightmare getting the credit to actually post reliably. Keep *all* your boarding cards, ticket stubs, itineraries etc until the miles appear and if they don't, fax in copies to AA. It might take months but they should appear eventually even if you have to hassle them to do it.
