I am curious, planning a trip to Japan. What kind of gifts? I know we discussed gifts to Irish business colleagues, but not Japanese hospitality staff.
Thanks.
Let me start by saying that the wrapping of the gift is critical. Has to be perfect! If you love beautiful gift wrap, Japan is the place to purchase such.
I try to bring along gifts that are made in my home state of Texas or are at least made in the USA. As suggested, see Post 6 above for the rules for each sort of exchange.
In one exchange I gave a Japanese business man a hand carved wooden key fob made in Texas. I didn't know the LED light in the key fob was made by his company in Japan. I really had a hit. He was thrilled! He gave me a beautiful scarf (had it in his brief case). Whenever I see him he greets me like a long lost daughter.
I suspect he had a selection of gifts in his brief case.
Don't even get me started on Japanese envelope rituals.
