* one of the reasons that UA might want to have a confirmation: while waitlisted (and not knowing if the upgrade requests will concretize) the costumer might have already used/reserved/disposed his upgrades for other flights and won't be willing or able to deliver (electronic or paper-vouchers at check-in).
* it should be possible to confirm online (I don't want to phone from Switzerland an 800-number in the USA)
