Does anyone have any more up-to-date info on this? I am going to Japan in July/August, and will be there for about 6 weeks, I think that buying a phone would probably be the cheapest option.

Also, how about just buying/renting a sim without the handset? I have an unlocked 3g phone here - that should work, right?
