It's generally hard to get prepaid service unless you're a resident in Japan.

And even if you had a SoftBank SIM card, the 8830 can only roam on 900/1800 MHz GSM networks (the European bands) while Japan's only GSM service is on 2100 MHz UMTS networks.

The new USA branch of DoCoMo claims that only their BlackBerries can roam in Japan.

So you're out of luck using that phone in Japan. Sorry.
