Accounting discrepancy?

Hi folks - looking for second opinions on the following...

Life story:

From the year dot I have had one account with BAEC - mostly gained miles through Tesco Clubcard.

Moved to the US in Oct last year, changed account to be US resident. Mostly so I could sign up for the Chase Visa CC to earn miles.

Still had points to post from Tesco and since these need to go to an account with the same address as Tesco I created another, UK based, account. Posted Tesco points and (attempted) to merge the accounts (i.e. transfer the UK balance to the US one).

Now when I look through my US account it contains (along with all my other transactions) the following two items;

03-Mar-08 03-Mar-08 Balance Adjustment 0 20,640
03-Mar-08 03-Mar-08 Balance Adjustment 0 -20,640

(for info 20,640 was the UK balance).

I have downloaded / copied to Excel all transactions (including the two above) from the year dot (luckily these fall within 3 years) and have summed these transactions. They equal my current balance as suspected.

My belief is that the second Balance Adjustment is incorrect and I am short of 20,640 miles.

Phrasing it another way: if I never flew, didn't have a Chase CC, didn't have any other method of earning miles other than Tesco CC I believe my balance would now show 0 (along with my UK account not existing anymore).

Akin to any bank account I would have expected only the first line to exist (if the second line is to exist anywhere it would be in the records of the now closed UK account).

You would not believe the headaches and heartache I have had trying to explain this to BA and I'm even beginning to doubt myself. BA's stock response? "It's just the way the Accounts systems show it".
