For cheap hotels in the area www.hotels.com and www.hostelbookers.com. The Aphrodite is just across the street from Termini and really was quite nice. Under $100 a couple months ago.

I have a similar issue as the OP (flight leaving at 6:45 a.m.). After researching all the options, I think it's best for me to crash at the airport. I arrive at 2:20 p.m. the day before, so I'll probably hang out in town until the late evening, take the last train to FCO, and figure something out.

I checked the Aphrodite and it's $150 now. I also looked at doing an SPG awards room, but they have no shuttle service so the taxi would be 40 euro each way... not my idea of a "free" room.

So all things considered, I'm going to give it a try. I'll let you all know how it works out.
