From my most recent posts many of you can tell I'm in the process of booking a MR. And I finally have--ORD to TPE.
What I've found curious about United.com is that when the flights I select are displayed with their exorbitant prices, and then below a number of cheaper alternates will appear, if I click on "select" to accept my original itinerary regardless of the large price, often times the resultant fare decreases by a large amount. For example, my ORD-TPE trip priced out, immediately after selecting flights, to something like $1,800. Once I selected that fare to purchase, the next window appeared with a $680 fare, the fare I paid.
Lesson: Don't give up on preliminary prices-- go all the way to a purchase option to see if anything changes.
