Talking How are op-ups processed in SQ?

I just got op-upgraded from SIN to SYD on SQ221 from Y to J. I have no status with Singapore Airlines but has Star Gold with BMI. My traveling companion is a solitaire PPS club member for 4 years. He didn't get the op-up and he continued to travel in Y.

I asked the check-in agent and asked why it was so. She told me that the computer decides who gets the op-up. Does anybody know how SQ decides on op-up? I would imagine my companion would have a higher chance at op-up than me.

In another case, I had a biz to first op up from LHR to SIN on SQ too. But my boss(whom is a PPS) didn't get it. Obviously due to "career reasons", I gave up my seat to my boss. But they kicked my boss backed to biz class. It made my boss mad but me happy.... haha

Just wondering what type of algorithm SQ has in deciding op-ups. I fly with CX quite often but due to company policy, have to fly with SQ now and am quite intrigued by how SQ op-up passengers.
