I don't think this is strictly a Marriott issue, markysharky - the two times I've stayed at a Hawthorne Suites (a Hyatt brand), my room hasn't been ready. My patience paid off, though, because both times I was upgraded. And I'm not a member of their program either.

I am currently in battle with them (UK customer services) right now over more missing nights credits (stay was pre-paid and points were added but not nights towards my membership renewal), they just ignore correspondence and when they do respond they dont actually answer the points raised. Way to go Marriott great way to treat your best customers.
While I agree that ignoring your correspondence is poor customer service, your stay may have been posted correctly, including the exclusion of Elite night credit, per Marriott's T&C's:

#7: Point accrual is limited to individual travel and the room must be paid for individually by the member. The member must have an individual room bill that is paid at checkout or direct billed to the party responsible for paying the bill. If the room is master billed, the charges are not eligible for Marriott Rewards points.
#8: Prepaid wholesale rates booked through 3rd party online retailers are not eligible for points, miles or Elite night credit, including, but not limited to, Priceline.com, Hotwire.com, Expedia.com, Orbitz.com, Travelocity.com, Hotels.com, etc. Wholesale packages and series tours are not eligible for points.
I'm only a Marriott Silver (the "candy" level ), but I've been treated exceptionally well by their hotels and customer service centers. I'm sorry your experience has been different.
