As it appears that you and your friend have clearly adhered to the T&C's; the good news is that she will not have to pay for both nights. (in the long term anyway)

It sounds as if the dreaded "weekend staff" scenario has occurred. On Monday AM, when the properly trained front desk shows up, she will have access to people who know how to process the coupon.

If I were YOU however, I would follow up with the GM myself, and let him/her know about the personal recommendation you made, with such poor consequences.

If it is any consolation; I wanted to use a Premium Pound at a Ren last week. The girl looked at it and said "we don't take foreign money". To which I replied "well, you do when Marriott prints it. see, it says right on the back - good at all Ren's worldwide". To which she replied - "that doesn't mean us".
