Should that applicant be there? Maybe, maybe not. But once they are there they get the same training as every FAM has since 2002.
There's a bright side to the news that the FAM program is drawing weaker and weaker applicants--it means the stronger applicants are doing something else. Whatever they're doing is more useful to society than what the FAMs currently do.

I'd much rather have the best and the brightest train to be police officers and highway patrol officers because in those roles they will actually confront criminals, serve citizens and interact with the public. They will actually improve the safety of our society in concrete, measurable ways.

If we have to have a FAM program, it's much better that the dumber, slower people are the ones wasting time flying around the country doing nothing.

Please send the smartest, the best shooters, and the most sane applicants to be cops in my city.

(On the other hand, it would be nice if the only people on planes allowed to carry guns received thorough psych evaluations.)
