I suspect the Egypt travel privileges using your national I.D. card probably will only apply to direct travel between your "home" country and Egypt, and using that national ID card only works for travel directly within the E.U. and the adjacent (EEA) countries. Otherwise I'm pretty certain you'll need a passport to leave N. America for the E.U. or E.E.A.

Maltese or Cypriot by any chance?
