The insanity is that the taxes/extras are only charged by the respective governments (and yes, the US charge a lot too), when you cross the border by air. Cross at a land crossing no charge; cross by air and the US govt charges you a customs inspection fee, an immigration fee and an agricultural inspection fee. Typically around $30
