A quick follow-iup.

I flew TPE->NRT on NH1083 yesterday. This flight was on one of the new NH 767-300's with the larger bins and seatback PTV that hamburgler referenced in his post. Again I was booked into Y, and sat in seat 17B.

A few observations:

1. In TPE, NH uses the EVA Evergreen lounge. As a *G, I was given a lounge invitation at checkin without having to ask for it. The Evergreen lounge in TPE is nice. Spacious, clean, free WiFi and good food/drink selection. Every bit as good as the SQ lounge that UA used.

1. The new 767-300 had larger overhead bins. These bins, while not as large as the 777 bins, are MUCH better than the old 767 bins. Everyone found spots for their bags without any problems that I could see.

2. I had a metal PTV box mounted under the seat in front of me, and it was a pain. Coach was a 2-3-2 arrangement. Looking around, it looked like the aisle seats on the outside, and the center seat in the middle have the PTV boxes under them. The PTV box is big and really takes up a lot of your legroom/underseat storage space. If you want an aisle seat on one of these birds, pick the center aisles, not the outside aisles.

3. If anything, Y on this airplane felt even more cramped then the older 767 that I flew on sunday. I did not have anyway to measure for sure, but I am positive that the seat pitch on this airplane was at least 1" less than the older bird I took NRT->TPE.

4. The seatback PTV was pretty cool. This one had about ten movies loaded, plus games (which I did not try) and airshow. The controller pops out of your arm rest (no touch screen), and operation is simple. You select your menu language (I think there were five languages to select from) and then navigate using the pad on the controller. I watched "I am Legend" and the video and sound quality were excellent. Best features? The ability to hit "pause", get up and use the lav, and then come back to where you left off, plus the ability to rewind or skip forward, just like a DVR. Wish UA had PTV like this in all their aircraft.

5. Finally, for the flying geek (like me), NH has cameras mounted on their 767's. One looks down, and the other looks forward. At about ten minutes from landing, they turned the look down camera on to the larger LCD screens mounted around the cabin. When we making our final approach into NRT, they switched to the look forward view. It was cool to see the runway out in the distance and then whole landing/taxi cycle.

Except for the crummy seat pitch, it was a very good experience and while I'll still miss UA881, these NH flights are going to work fine for me.
