Empress, as usual, is correct on both counts. This is just a nested, or end on end routing. And as also stated, if irregular ops occurs, you will likely lack protection. I did use this succesfully two or three years ago however on a UA routing ex-SFO-NRT, nesting NRT-SIN. Had to buy 5 tickets in the summer on short notice, and this saved me some money due to a sale in the NRT-SIN market. Why this trip to Japan took place in summer god forbid is a different matter, but it did work out for me price wise.

And in response to your other question, this should be just one SWU each way per ticket.
