It is the programming and display. Mine has a larger and better display - similar to the one built into your car. Since I get a new car every 2 years, I don't have to spend the $1000-$3000 option that they cost built in. Mine has fairly sophisticated programming abilities ( multiple stops and way points, etc ) and is set up for marine use also. I can plug-in chips that make it a marine plotter.
