Bailing on AVG Antivirus (?)

I'm quite dismayed at what I'm hearing about AVG's upgrade to their Internet Security suite, v8.0. What was once a lean and light-on-resources antivirus engine is apparently now bloated and resource-hogging.

My current subscription is about to expire; I can keep v7.5 and simply extend my virus signature updates for another 2 years, or I can look at alternatives. It doesn't appear to be a good idea to upgrade to v8.0 at this time . . .

Any suggestions (besides the monstrosities that are McAfee and Symantec/Norton)? Kaspersky seems to be highly rated, as is BitDefender. Any personal experiences to relate?

Note: A search turned up plenty of hits, but most of them were recommending AVG!
