I guess if you are connecting in Salt Lake City, then flying could save time over driving. I guess whether or not the higher cost of flying to RKS vs. just to SLC is worth it would depend on your circumstances (such as how long your layover will be at the SLC airport) and budget.
Well, I omitted the middle part of your post. Delta is not marketing this destination to people from SLC. SLC is a HUB on the Delta network. There are dozens of examples of flights that they would never otherwise operate. I doubt many people are flying to PIH from SLC for the weekend. DAY is 63 miles from CVG. MCN-ATL...rather doubtful. Your original point was basically questioning Delta flying the route because no one would but the
majority of people flying at SLC airport aren't stopping or ending there.
Why would you assume that there would be a "higher cost of flying to RKS". It might be cheaper depending upon the market.
