Grosvenor Square Update

Just back from five nights here, and a few comments (as opposed to a full blown trip report)....

Major developments are basically two. First of all, the CL has been relocated to the basement floor....next to a re-done fitness center. Both are upgrades over previous. Only negative is the new room is slightly sterile, given that it lacks windows. The "new age/techno" music (from an ipod) fits cool, chic London. An obvious attempt to appeal to a younger, "hipper" clientele, but it all seems oddly out of sync with the traditional charm and elegance of the hotel and its Mayfair surroundings.

The spread in the morning is about the same as before....cereals, yogurt, breads, pastries, cold meats, cheeses. Good, but nothing special. In the evening, its more upscale with appetizers and deserts apparently coming from Gordon Ramsay's newly-expanded restaurant operation. (Quality, not quantity is the rule).

That brings me to the second new development. The Maze Grill has opened Friday, April 11 as a companion restaurant to the original Maze. The "Grill" occupies the former "Cobalt" restaurant and bar space. If you're looking for a $27 cheeseburger, this is the place for you! (At least it comes with fries).

Mrs. Cyberdad and I stopped in for lunch on opening day. We couldn't get a reservation at the new grill, but we were able to snag a table at the original Maze. After two basically bad experiences here, the third time was a charm....with both the food and the service were superf. They've re-worked the decor slightly since our last visit a year and a half ago. Its now bright, cheery, and welcoming. Be sure to bring your wallet!

All in all, our entire five night stay was one of the best in my nearly ten years as a customer. Upgrade from standard room to executive king with park view.
The king beds here are as good as the new bedding package gets, with super comfy pillows and high-thread count sheets. The service was nearly flawless. The only glitch in our five-night stay was the lack of a wakeup call one morning (fortunately, I was up anyway).

Finally, other threads have mentioned ongoing construction/rennovations. The finishing touches are being applied to the new CL and fitness center area, but these appear to be in their final phases, and are essentially transparent to guests.

Anyone with specific questions can feel free to pm me. Frankly, with a pretty full schedule of business and family stuff, my free time at the hotel was far more limited than usual, but I'll do my best to answer.
