a)Most contracts I've seen say something along the lines of "standard working hours are xx to yy, but, as a __________ (insert job title) you may be required to work outside these to support urgent business needs". Again, I am not an expert in US employment law, but having to constantly work/travel outside those hours certainly is a contractual violation over here. Many professional people do agree to that type of thing, but it's discretionary.
b) Negotiation has nothing to do with threats...it's up to the parties to agree to a mutually acceptable solution.
