There is even a Gold that can be gifted, but I doubt many people would do it since, it's either the Gold membership or two international SWUs.

And everybody was new at one point, so don't worry about it. As has been pointed out, you need to have more posts and times before you can see the Coupon Connection forum. I'm sure you could look on Craig's List or eBay, but those sources can be dangerous.

When I first became elite 6 years ago, I was amazed at the amount of upgrades I got as a silver. I think 80% the first few months, I had it. The airline industry has changed a bit, so it would be less than that now, but if you choose your flights carefully, and find flights with more first class seats open, you'll be in better shape for a free upgrade.
