This happens with the SO too. Before she became elite, I spent many times in Y while she enjoyed F. No biggie. SO doesn't travel much so she deserves to fly in style whenever possible, IMHO.
The rule in my house:
Wife gets better seat, e.g. for 3-cabin plane, she sits in First, I sit in Business; or she sits in Business, I sit in Economy.
But I try to get both us in the premium cabin whenever possible.
