The A380 just looks like a scaled-up "normal" aircraft.

I agree. We saw the A380 when being bussed from T1 to T4 recently - it was just pushing back and we got to T4 in time to see it take off.
From a distance - even though it is huge - it sort of looks short and squat and that creates the illusion that it is smaller than the 747.
Those 4 massive engines are scary up close though......
