Are you sure about that? Most US airlines (AFAIK) have a concept called "Bid Scheduled Trip Guarantee" or BSTG. What this basically means that if the trip you bid and got scheduled on is cancelled for any reason for no fault of yours, you are guaranteed payment for the scheduled length of that trip. And a trip is defined as the entire pattern for that crew, which may involve several flights over several days.

Or did this change in recent years? It certainly was the case in NWA at least until 2004.
