While I agree with most of your statement I have to say that the treatment on UA and other US airlines on awards is far worse.

LH for example pays you full VDB in case they have to downgrade you on an award/mileage upgrade while other just bump you down to Y and give you your upgrade instrument back

Not saying they do it because they like the customers so much, maybe more some sort of EU regulation.
