I flew SFO-ORD in mid-Feb and checked a 12-bottle styrofoam wine box (which incidentally was loaded to 100% capacity). They taped it up with the "United Luggage" tape and slapped several "Fragile" stickers on it. Arrived in ORD with no issues.
