A couple other more knowledgeable sorts may care to chime in and confirm or correct this, but it is my understanding that for slots in NRT it is much like with UA tickets these days. i.e. use it or lose it. The period that must elapse is 6 months although I do not know what appeal procedures there are or what level of use would be required to maintain the slot.
