Roll back the update that caused the problem. Go to Windows Update, then click Review your update history under Options on the left. Write down or note the KB number of the update you took on the specific date - if multiple updates on that date, click on each update and read the description and find the one that affected USB.

Armed with the KB number, go into Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel, make sure Show updates is checked at the top, and look for your KB number. It may be in one of several areas, so look carefully. Then remove it.

After removing it, run Windows Update again. Select Custom rather than Express. When it finds the update again (note the KB number), uncheck it, then check the Don't show this update again.
