To be clear -- We started on the Shinano side of the mountain very early and made it to the other side (Toyama) by 5.00pm. That was not a return trip. It was one way.

Let me repeat my recommendation that you look at the timetable on the Alpen Route web site. You will also find information on that site about when the route closes for winter etc. It's very informative.
