Just one comment about using Benadryl and the like:
Never give anything on the plane that you haven't already tried at home.

Benadryl has a sedating effect on some kids but causes others to become hyperactive and irritable. You don't want to find out on the plane that your kid falls into the second category! It's also a good idea to discuss it with your pediatrician beforehand if you have any questions.
