What did you install?

Have you tried doing a system restore to the point before you installed that update?
It was a MS update. No, did not do a system restore.

-unplugged and re-plugged in everything.
-tried new USB ports
-deleted the entries in the device manager and restarted

Nothing. It wants a driver and everything I'm finding says the driver is attached with SP2 which was downloaded ages ago except that this download I got came through IBM/Lenovo (R51 Thinkpad) but it was MS XP update and I downloaded it late last week.
