I got comped to AA Plat based on my UA's Prem Exec, mostly as a trial. And I've been quite happy with AA, even with some of the cons other have mentioned below.

Also speaking of "normal" vs "FT" people, my parents have remarked that with my "extensive" knowledge of airlines, I should become an airline analyst/consultant. Good idea, but I fear there are plenty of folks here who would make a better analyst.
