That is a seriously, seriously bad idea. Going through customs without knowing what is in your luggage? You're lucky they were lenient with you.
I would agree with you on a normal basis, but it's almost always clothes and toys for our family in India, so I didn't even question the pre-packed bag. However, I made him promise to tell me what he packed in the future so that I wouldn't be running around with 800 ball point pens without realizing. ^
