You are good. The fuel surcharge is applied only to awards obtained using NH's AMC miles. No fuel surcharge is assessed when using UA miles.

Count me as another flyer who's dropped-out from the NH's mileage program, despite being an elite level flyer for the last several years. Great airline, but the out-of-pocket costs for award travel finally didn't make sense to me.
