I've bought up to a higher fare once -- but it was the way that auh2o has described before on this board: I had an upgrade from a full fare coach ticket, and there was a long delay that I thought would lead to a cancellation, so I bought up to F to be treated as a full fare F rather than an upgrade. (Thanks, auh2o!)

You shouldn't have a problem buying up to a higher fare class, although I've never tried ot buy up from a T to a Q...
