While we are on that topic you could also do SFO-ICN on United and connect to Asiana to HKG. However, unless the price is comparable, I would choose the LAX-HKG myself for the simple reason that it seems to be a light selling flight with the promotions in place now and from this thread it sounds like it is a much easier flight to upgrade on plus you may have an open seat next to you in coach.

For my trip to HKG this summer I am taking the SFO-HKG over simply cause I love the SFO international terminal, I consider the service from SFO based crews to be consistently excellent, and I have dreams that United may have a new config 747 in service on this route because of the intense competition they have with Cathay Pacific. I am taking the HKG-LAX back fro the extra EQMs on my way to ORD.
