The one low cost carrier I regularly fly is Jetstar. Towards the end of each flight, the CC comes around with big black bags asking for all rubbish, saying it helps save cleaning time, therefore turnaround time, and therefore keeps fares low. Pax ferret around in seatbacks etc looking for trash and hence the plane is remarkably rubbish free when you deplane, compared to say a BA flight where there are papers, plastic cups, food wrappers, etc all over the place.
If BA did this there might be more time for deeper cleaning. My last flight from LHR-SYD had coffee stains on the UD bins as well, and what looked like brownie crumbs smeared all over the seat and carpet.

Can you imagine the uproar if DYKWIA premium passengers were expected to clean up after themselves having paid £xxxx for their ticket. I don't think that suggestion would go down too well...
