I have a work colleague who is AC Elite (*Gold), who calls United in the US once he has ticketed a reservation and obtains an E+ seat assignment. He last did this 2 weeks ago, usually works without a problem.
For some reason the Dublin call centre don't seem to like doing this, even though *Gold are in theory entitled to sit in E+ if there is space available.
Right about the upgrade situation though - the only reason UA can upgrade on LH (and vice versa) is because these 2 carriers have a bilateral agreement which goes a bit further than the more general *A cooperation.
