It is unusual but not uncommon, last summer I was on an LHR-IAD flight that went out over Scotland, came across the southern part of Greenland, then appeared to almost fall off the world as we flew what appeared to be almost due southwest over most of the US.

Had the very same thing happen on a LHR-YYZ flight last October. Flew northerly over the tip of Greenland.The flight then entered Canada over Newfoundland and then proceeded down the Bay of Fundy turned over Maine and then flew over New Hampshire,Vermont and all the way in over upstate New York finally turning right over Buffalo and then back into YYZ. In my lifetime I've done at least 200+ Europe-YYZ flights and have never took a routing like that.
